Perlin is primarily a decentralized marketplace on blockchain. Perlin works on several verticals, engaging in projects that focus on both the individual users and the business cases, such as international trade.
Perlin: About the Platform
Perlin is a blockchain-based AI-focused startup with projects focusing on B2C, B2B and social good.
(Pilot) International Trade Platform on Blockchain - ICC TradeFlow
In November 2019, Perlin announced new project called ICC TradeFlow within their partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the DBS Bank and the Trafigura physical commodities trading group.
The entities listed above have launched a collaborative effort with the government of Singapore to gradually move the backoffice processes of international trade from paper to blockchain.
The project builds on the already present IMDA’s TradeTrust network infrastructure as a base. That ensures the new blockchain-based platform’s compatibility with the existing digital trade platforms on which the global trade connectivity of Singapore relies.
According to the project outline, international trade to and from Singapore is to continue seamlessly through the transformation, but the trade document transit time is expected to decrease by more than half from 45 to 20 days.
However, the future of the project depends on the results of the November 2019 pilot - a 20 MM USD iron ore deal between Africa and China.
The Decentralized Supercomputer
One of Perlin’s first innovative ideas was to make use of underutilized computational power in everyday smart-devices to make supercomputing accessible and cost-effective thanks to a decentralized network.
In essence, it is the idea of cryptojacking - making use of the extra power that your smartphone can provide, only with Perlin it is not done in an illicit fashion:
“Our positioning is to become Airbnb for cloud computing,” said one of Perlin’s co-founders Kenta Iwasaki in an interview for the Chinese version of MIT Technology Review.
The very first use of the cloud computing platform that is developed by Perlin is going to be a socially economic initiative - a January 2019 hackaton called “AI 4 All” organized by leading tech organizations of India and Indonesia with the aim to use cutting-edge technology for helping poor communities in both organizing countries and globally.
The Tech: Perlin’s Wavelet Ledger
The distributed ledger that Perlin uses is called Wavelet.
- Wavelet promises higher transaction throughput than common public blockchains, backed up by benchmarking results.
- It runs on a proof-of-stake algo, but the computational layer takes from DAG (directed acyclic graph, made famous by IOTA).
- It is Sybil-resistant with a privacy layer and made for dApp development.
Wavelet has been running on testnet since October 2018 and has undergone extensive benchmarking in early 2019.
The Wavelet benchmark test was done over several hundreds of VPS instances with commonplace network conditions including packet loss.
That should prove the transaction throughput of Wavelet ledger is indeed higher than that of mainstream blockchains, even in realistic network conditions. More here.
According to the benchmark, the latest version of Wavelet ledger as implemented by Perlin can process up to 31k transactions per second, which is more than 20x higher than the pre-benchmark estimate originally published by Perlin in the 2018 version of their whitepaper.
- Perlin team publishes regular development updates on Medium and Twitter @PerlinNetwork.
